I learned to wind yarn around my thumb holding the end so it would pull form the middle. I saw one of these things in Hobby Lobby one day and it was only $5.99 and I had a 40% coupon so I bought it. Figured if I couldn't work it there wasn't much wasted. I tried it and after a time or two got the hang of it. Works just like wrapping around my thumb! I use it all the time now
