i have tried a lot of different ways to make a
turning chain but this one is the best i've found.

I just started a baby afghan that is primarily DC's across and tried this method for the turn and it works beautifully!  Just had to practice two or three times to get the proper tension and now it's like I'm a pro.  You gotta try this method.  The afghan edges look so much cleaner and neater.
