oh my gosh..does anyone still sell yarn?

OK first it was walmart and michaels has been getting skimpier.  I am trying to start some things for my baby (just completed one with simply soft from walmart) and am on vacation so I have TIME. I ahve the projects picked out...and went to 3 stores, the only 3 in town (population 500K!) Michael's, Joannes fabrics, and hancock fabrics.  All have significantly reduced their yarn selection (hancock to almost zero) and the selection of yarns, or even the selection of colors in the same brand.  Since when does Michaels have only 1 1/2 aisles?  And no lion hear?  joannes used to have more than the basic companies.  No stores had baby blue.  No stores had enough of anything to complete a blanket unless it was a color I didn't need or a mixed color...even then not necessarily in a brand I wanted.  What int he world has happened?  Is it the economy?  More and more over the last year or so I ahve been ordering yarn online.  NOw I HAVE to.  But this comes with its own risks in colors and textures!

I've noticed that as well as our local JoAnn's & Michaels.  I'm still lucky though as we have an AC Moores and in less than a week, we will have our very first Hobby Lobby.  I hope you have some luck finding what you need.

Feeling your pain!  I'm primarily a thread crocheter and of the 3 basic sizes (10, 20, 30), I prefer working with the 30 for a finer look.  All of the stores mentioned above only sell the size 10, which to me feels like CORD thickness after being used to working with the finer 30.  I've had to resort to ordering all of my crochet thread online and I dont' like to do that ... i'm a touchy-feely shopper plus it's a pain when I have to decide "do I spend the extra money and order 7 so I'm sure I'll have enough and possibly end up with an extra thing of thread that i can't use, or can I go ahead and order just 6 but run the risk of having to order another one later and pay for shipping again?"  big sigh!

Hope your incoming Hobby Lobby is better than mine.  The selection is mine is smaller than Michaels, which is smaller than Joann's.

    This dilemma has been creeping up on us for several years and now it is a painful reality just about everywhere that we shop.  Yes, I believe it is due to the economy, cost of textiles, shipping, etc.  Unfortunately we are  SUCH a computer / online buying society these days---we are now being expected and basically forced to shop online.  Ho Hum and sigh, sigh sigh.  I could get started on a good rant so I had better just stop talking.
