hi all, I've just joined and have a question.

I am making a hat from the "King cole" pattern 3400 double knit.

I am just returning to crochet so unsure of this... the hat is made up in treble stitch - which is (from what i understand) an open stitch and sure enough it is open when i crochet it. However on the patten it looks more closed.
can I have your advice please - do you think I am doing something wrong?
i have checked my tension and I am close(not perfect ) but i am treating this as my first attempt to learn - i'm guessing that with practice my tension will change in the next couple of weeks anyway.
the pattern photo can be found here it's the purple one - do you think i should be able to get it as closed/tight as this?    http://www.kingcole.co.uk/knitting-patterns/scarves-and-accessories/hats-and-scarves-20.html

thanks

I think I may have solved this myself. When checking around the internet I find that English and American stitches are different. As my pattern is english i guess i should be doing an English treble crochet - whereas i have been doing an american treble (= english double)!

If it is an American pattern than it would be a double crochet and after looking at it, it looks like a double crochet.  English pattern stitches are different than American.  Even if it isn't an American pattern I would still use a double for a tighter stitch.
