Does anybody crochet big things (shawls, afghans, etc.) with no idea of what to do with them? Sometimes I want to, but I wonder if it would be a waste.

I love to crochet afghans and have a stack sitting in a bedroom.  They can be donated to Hospice, Nursing Homes, etc.  I give a lot as gifts to different people.  I just enjoy crocheting and I prefer crocheting afghans.

I try to keep at least 4 afghans in my stash for gifts.  Usually 3 baby afghans (1 boy, 1 girl & 1 neautral) just so I have gifts handy and don't have to work on a deadline.  I also try to keep one more adult afghan (usually a throw or lapghan size) around too in a neautral/general style that can be an emergency gift as well.

Baby afghans or lapghans are a good size if you want to do a larger, but not huge project, especially if you are just making for stash or future gifts.

I have about 4 dozen baby afghans that I "just haven't gotten around to" donating.  I crochet all the time as more of an OCD thing (must keep my hands busy).  I really should get to the three local hospitals and donate them.  Sigh, there really is no excuse on my part for having so many on hand, but it has made baby shower gift-giving a lot easier  ;-)

I don't make really big afghans much anymore but lapghans and baby blankets and shawls are great "larger" projects and can easily find homes (donations or as gifts) if you have no need for them or have some accumulating.  I especially like making shawls.  I use a variety of my own and I know alot of women who like them when received as gifts.  And, donating a shawl as a "prayer shawls" is very rewarding too. I have many large afghans on hand, baby afghans, baby outfits..only because I enjoy crocheting them.  I find it hard to resist a beautiful afghan pattern..so I keep everything on hand for pop showers or b-day gifts and even if I'm in a bind for Christmas...............
