I'm a newbie crocheter. Wondering what to do if the yarn tends to slip off the hook. I'm using the right hook for the yarn. Is it me or the yarn or the hook? I have metal hooks and I'd rather not buy another set of hooks just yet. Is there a trick or two to make the yarn not so slippery?

I'm not sure what to tell you apart from MAYBE you need to adjust the tension of your stitches.  It sounds like perhaps you are feeding the yarn to the hook too loosely, or perhaps the stitch / loop on the hook is too loose.  Maybe the loop on the hook is too close to the end of the hook?  I have trouble sometimes with yarn slipping off my knitting needles but not the crochet hooks.  (I use aluminum and steel hooks ---I find plastic, acrylic, etc. to be slippery).

I find yarns slips when I use anything but Susan Bates hooks. I've heard other crocheters say the same about other brands. I can't use my beautiful hand-carved hooks because they're based on Boye. I find the yarns doesn't go as smoothly when I'm using plastic ones, except the large hollow ones.

I agree with both ladies - when I first started that darn yarn kept poppin off my hook - it was sooooo frustrating, but the more you keep at it you will eventually get the hang of it and you'll soon notice it doesn't slip off quite so often (just a note - the ladies who have been crocheting for years still have yarn slip off every now and again - they just get it back on the hook quicker than us newbies and you don't even have time to notice  - haha:D)  If I use plastic hooks the yarn tends to get hung up on them - I have to sand the edges down to make it smooth.  I think the aluminum hooks work the best for me.  Just keep at it and practice- you'll eventually get the hang of it!! Good luck!!

Practice Practice Practice....I agree with all previous post. I have been crocheting for years and I occasional have my yarn fall off, especially when I work with thread and those small tiny hooks. Crocheting with thread is not my first choice, but I have been making my kids Christmas ornaments lately and that normally calls for working with thread, not being used to crocheting with thread I have to be more alert until I get back into the feel and hang of it. Good Luck, just keep going and before you know it you will have it down.  Wink
