I came across a pattern for a gorgeous scarf with beads. It requires about 600 beads. No where on the pattern it specifies when I have to string the beads onto the yarn. It only says "bring the bead up close to the needle" etc etc. So is the assumption I have the string all 600 beads onto the yarn before I even start?

Basic question, I know Smiley thank you for help.

You string the beads first. If the pattern allows for starting new yarn, you can start with some and add more later. Carol Ann is our bead gal so she may have some input for you.

Tweed is quite correct  Grin you need to string all of your beads first.  It IS easier to be able to add more beads later---but only if you are breaking or changing yarn for some reason.  600 beads being put on a scarf sounds like you might be using tiny beads---which are much lighter in weight---but depending on the weight of the thread or yarn the beads could potentially get a little heavy when you are using the working yarn.  You may need to elevate your ball of yarn with the strung beads on it to a comfortable height (like a tabletop next to your chair) for easier "feeding" of the yarn as you work.  You will know what works best when you see how easily the beads slide on your yarn...and how heavy they are.   If your beaded scarf pattern is sharable I would love to see what it is.
