Ok, sorry for all the detail but I need help and I have no idea where I went wrong so here goes....

I'm making a blanket for the first time. I was taught basic stitches (single, double) and am trying to make a ripple pattern. I found this video to learn how to do this pattern. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo8q5...20004D&index=1) She said she used increments of 17+4 to start so I chained counting 17 several times until I got a length I liked, added 4 more and began the next row. The video instructs to chain 3, increase 3, 5 double , decrease 3, 5 double and repeat. I did this on my first row. Everything added up correctly and the first row looked good. This is where the problems began. On the next row, I attempted the same pattern but found that the second row didn't match up with the first row. The increases were not lining up on top of each other and neither were the decreases. In order to make them line up, I had to alter the number of stitches in between the increases and decreases. Most of them ended up being 4 rather than 5. On the third row, same problem but all the stitches in between were 4. I did the same for the fourth row. By the fifth row, I decided to try to correct the problem but only decreasing 2 instead of 3 and that seemed to help a little. I have now finished row six and when I lay the blanket flat, it looks like the newest rows have fewer stitches than the older rows. (The beginning edge puckers, like there is more material on that edge.)

I really don't want to start over (mostly because I don't know what I did wrong and will therefor probably make the same mistake again) but if someone could tell me how to get it back to the pattern of increase 3, 5 double, decrease 3, I would be very appreciative. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

*This picture is a close up of somewhere in the middle. I tried to get close enough so that each stitch could be seen. The green side is the beginning. Also, I flattened out the puckering I described so that the stitches could be seen more clearly.

Hi.   Smiley  I tried to view the video link but it said there was a malformed URL video ID and wouldn't play.  Maybe you could try posting the link again ?  I will need some time later today to try to work the pattern from your written directions.  Question:  are you turning at the end of each row properly???  Chaining the right number for turning and then starting into the correct stitch at the beginning of the next row?  I am sure it is a simple error (either in the pattern or made by you) and can be easily corrected.  My main advice for the moment is to rip it all out and start over.  I know none of us likes to do that but it is better in the long run.  Trying to continue the work and constantly be trying to "fudge" the outcome is not the best way to learn and you will end up with something that is not totally satisfying nor rewarding.  Take it from me!  I used to do it myself!  Fortunately crochet is quickly undone and quickly re-done (as compared to knitting...sigh).  I will hope to see the video and hope to get to a sample swatch later.  perhaps someone else will pop in here today and be able to help, too.   Grin

QUESTION:  What does the pattern or video say about your turning chain?  Are you told to count the turning chain as the first stitch?
In what chain do you make the first stitch of the first row (and each of the following rows)?
When you make the increase...is it increase 1 st in each of the next 3 stitches?  Decrease 1 stitch in each of the next 3 stitches?
What does the edges of your blanket look like?
I sure would like to read the actual pattern.......or see the video.  A ripple is a ripple BUT they can be written in different ways.
