You are correct, beginning in 8th chain from hook you single crochet, then chain 5 skip the next 3 chains from the beginning chain, and you repeat, you single crochet in the 8th chain, chain 5, skip next 3 chains repeat until the end. In 2) you chain 5, single crochet in the last chain 5 that you did in the previous row, then chain 5 , and then repeat it until you get to the beginning chain space.
Don't worry - you'll get the hang of it, it just takes getting used to it. When I can't understand it I will say it outloud slowly and it seems to be more understandable to me - hope that helps and good luck!

I'm new to crocheting and am attempting to read a pattern. I had an easier time in calculus, honestly. Can somebody please tell me what this means:
1)beg in eighth ch from hook * sc in eighth ch, ch 5, skip next 3 ch; rep from * across, end sc in last sc, turn
-I'm reading that to say "beginning in eighth chain from hook, single crochet in eighth chain, chain 5..." and that's where I get lost
2)ch 5, *sc in next ch-5 space, ch 5; rep from * across, end sc in beg ch-space, turn
-aside from understanding "chain 5", I'm lost.
Thanks!
