I'm using an older pattern, and they referred to a long treble. In the same instructions they refer to using a treble (single), so I know it's not the same. I tried to look it up, but there are so many different names, and different instructions, and so many old phrases I may go mad! Please explain. (One good thing: I found out I've been making my single trebles wrong for years.)  Huh

In U.S. terms:  The US double treble (also called double triple) is another basic stitch, the next step up in length from the treble. The abbreviation is dtr. It's used when a long stitch is needed within a crochet design.  I believe this is probably what the pattern is asking for.  If you wanted a REALLY LONG STITCH you might be told in a pattern to do a triple treble.
