Hi everybody, I'm new and I want to excuse for my bad english, I'm writing from Italy.

I'm asking your help because a friend of mine showed me this fantastic baby blanket and I would like to understand the stitch. Unfortunately my friend cannot help me because the blanket was done by her grandma, and she lives very far from us.

I understood that the blanket is made up of squares, and these squares are keeped together with the pearls.

The thing that I don't understand is the stitch used for those "shell" in the edges... I tried to search on books and magazines but I had no success...

I thank you in advance for your help!!

WOW!  that is an amazingly beautiful blanket!  It looks perhaps a little familiar but I have seen something similar made in one piece---rows.  I have not seen the squares in that stitch pattern.  Even though the friend's grandmother lives far away perhaps you or your friend could write a letter or make a telephone call and ask her if she has the pattern written down.  If not written, maybe she could try to explain it.  I am very curious about this pattern now!  Good Luck!

It looks like a puff stitch.  By the way, I would never use the pearls on a baby blanket as it could be a choking hazard.  Here are a few wxamples of how to do a puff stitch.

It's not puff stitch because as you can see there is very few yarn in each stitch, but it's very slack!

Looks almost like a shell st.  Looks like it's done by making  a square by doing 4 dc then chain 4 times.  Thennext row 13 or 14 TR (couldnt quite see) in those chain spaces.  Repeated this so they have lots of these squares and then joined the squares together with the bead by the 1st and last st of the shell.. Does that make sense.... hard to describe.. Could try it out for you and take pics to compare if you would like?

Manda, I already tried this way but the aren't dc and tr because when you do dc/tr the yarn rolls up making something like a small pillar, instead in this stitch the yarn is very slack and "free"
I don't know if I manage to explain what I mean!

I think the white yarn would show up better if you put a piece of colored cloth underneath it and then take a photograph.  The color would show through and define the stitches a little better.

Could it just be done with fine yarn and a large hook to make it looser?

I don't think so because the chains are not so loose

Kinda looks like a long crochet stitch might be used.  I'm gonna have to do some searching to see if I can come up with something because that is truely a beautiful pattern and I wouldn't mind learning it.  I'll left you know what I find out.

I found a pattern for the stitch you were looking for.  It's on Ravely (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/puffed-star-baby-blanket). The picture that comes with the pattern looks just like the one you posted.  What a coincidence.

They are clusters made up of long double crochets. The link to the pattern is in my previous post.  Looks like you make several motifs, then sew them together, which is where I think the step with the pearls comes in.  It does look lovely, and very unique.
