What pattern are you using for the afghan. Our granddaughter is getting married in June and I'm looking for a pattern. Have several in mind but can't make up my mind which one to do.

http://www.yarn.com/webs-knitting-crochet-yarns-closeouts/webs-knitting-yarns-ryc-silk-wool-dk/Webs has Rowan Classic Silk Wool DK on sale 4.99 ball Content: 50% Merino/50% Silk Weight/Yardage: 50g/109yd Knitting Weight: DK I've actually seen this warn & it is very nice, have never worked with it. That other one is raw silk which I am not sure how that feels, one of the silks (i can't remember the name) is rougher than you would think silk would be, maybe someone is more familiar with these than me too.

I would go Avalanche rather than Rapunzel, the yard/weight is right between the 2 yarns recommended in the pattern.
Soie De La Mer 260y=3.53oz = 73.6y/oz Studio Silk 120y=1.75oz = 68.6y/oz Avalanche 250y=3.5oz = 71.4y/oz Rapunzel 333y=5.3oz = 63y/oz
Lace weight is way off.

I haven't ordered any yarn yet to do the dying thing. I am waiting for summer, Knowing what a slob I am I want to do it outside where I can't ruin anything else.
They only dye I have seen in stores here is RIT, someone here said it is for cotton, not wool, but the website says you can do both & silk. Not sure if the koolaid dye would work, never done that, sounds cheezy to me.
Rit has a nice websie (ritdye.com) with lots of tips & techniques & info. I would start there. I know around here RIT is easily available & inexpensive enough you could do a little experimenting with like some white t's.
